After showing off my kitchen last week when I discussed how our kitchen has held up after four years of daily use and abuse, I mentioned there was one last thing I wanted to change. It's an easy swap in theory, but finding the perfect thing is going to be the real challenge. It's a new kitchen table — I want one and I have an exact vision of what I want but am not finding anything that looks like it in the right size or our price range.
Here's why I want to change our current kitchen table out: it's about space. Our kitchen layout makes it where you have to swoop around the table while walking through the kitchen, as to not hit the table or the chairs. It's not oversized per se, but it's probably too big considering how little we use it. We very rarely dine at it, and even more rarely together. I think having a smaller table will help with the flow of the space more than us having a large table will help us overall.
That isn't to say our current table isn't really awesome, because it is! It's an IKEA table that seats four, but there's a hidden leaf built right into it. It extends out to seat between six to eight people, depending on how comfortable everyone is with squeezing in. We honestly don't even have enough chairs to seat eight people, but we make do on the one time a year when we have people over to eat. We just aren't dinner party having kind of folks, mostly due to the fact that we have three greedy dogs who know how to seek out suckers who will give them food, or who don't guard their food with their life.
The round shape is nice though, I like to have less corners on which I could potentially knock against and bruise myself. I think for flow though, a square table would be best. Here's what I'm picturing in my mind as an ideal look for the table:
I'm really stuck on the idea of a marble topped table. Does anyone have a marble top table and have thoughts on it? I figure the gray veining will complement the gray in the kitchen cabinets, and it'll provide a lightness to the area. Plus marble looks fancy and cool. I'd like to stick with dark brown wood to complement the tone of the floors, and simple square legs with no detailing. And it's got to be regular height, not a counter height one that requires tall barstool chairs.
The problem with marble topped tables of course, is that big chunks of marble ain't cheap. I'm not willing to go with a faux marble either, in that I don't want marble veneer. I'd be willing to go with faux marble in the sense of granite that mimics marble, or perhaps even quartz.
Luckily this isn't a pressing issue, or even one that bothers me too often, but it's still kind of on my mind from time to time, especially when I see marble topped tables on other blogs! But the clear chairs definitely have to stay. They also are from IKEA, and besides being very comfortable, their clear-ness helps to not add a lot more visual weight to the room.
Anyone else have redecorating fever as spring is slowly starting to come into view?
