September Roundup

Butternut squash soup decorated to look like Trump

This month absolutely whizzed by. Do I say this every month? I feel like I do, but it was especially true this September, so luckily this roundup will remind me of some of the things that happened in the past four weeks.

The only good thing about September rushing by is that we're ever closer to getting the election over with. I am so sick of hearing about it, speculating about it, hearing other people speculate about it, and the increasingly awful things that are going on in relation to it. Just... let it be over so we know our fate. Also, I hope everyone enjoys voting in this election, in case it's the last election we ever have. Let that soak in for a minute.

Oh, and if you're wondering about the header image... it's a butternut squash soup I made and decorated to look like a certain orange person we all hate. I was inspired by the debates on the second to last evening of this month. The soup was fantastic.

Anyways, on to non-political stuff because we're all sick of it. Food! I made a lot of recipes in September, and reviewed a lot of meat alternatives in my new Faux Meats Friday series.

Around the House

We (me, I almost always mean just me by this) didn't do a lot around the house this month, really. I discussed fire pit design ideas because fire pit season is upon us! It's the time to snap one up before they get sold out.

I also put together my outdoor dining table and changed my plans. It was going to go on the backyard patio, but after enjoying it under the carport and seeing how much junk falls from the big oak trees in the backyard, it's going to stay where it is for now and maybe forever.

A few failures around the house included a bed frame splitting, so I got a new one that lets us store lots of stuff under the bed, a big win. I also tried blackout roller curtains in the bedroom, but they stopped rolling up after a week of use. Back to the store they went. You can see my highly unimpressed review on the Lowe's website. All of this has given me a bit of home improvement burnout, which is fine because clutter clearing is on my mind. My mom and I are doing one more yard sale for the rest of our lives in early October. So I'll be collecting stuff we don't want to hold on to for the next few days. After that, no more yard sales EVER.

This is about the extent of my fall/Halloween decorating, minus a not-pictured fall wreath on the front door. Lavender buds seemed seasonally inappropriate at this point, even though the air around the front of the house is still delightfully scented with lavender from the plants growing out front.

I am preparing for it to get cold and thinking of upcoming projects to keep me busy inside while winter rages on. It includes a LOT of painting, so I am not doing any of that right now.

Otherwise

Beyond food and home stuff, I've been happily maintaining a weekly yoga practice, and doing some more inconsistent workouts in between. About every other day I am doing pushups in the evening, as many as I can until the point of fatigue. I plan to add in other whole body moves too, like lunges and squats, to stay even top to bottom! Add in walking 1-2 miles more days than not, and I am feeling better than I have in a long time. That's really why I exercise — because not feels awful in the long run.

Plus I need to keep my body in shape so I can take care of myself when I am 90. I have a lot of long-lived great aunts I am aiming to beat out by a few years at least. 95+, at least.
