The April Blake

March Roundup

Wow, March started a little weird and just got even weirder. Weird for everyone in the whole world, all at once. People are calling this the first global pandemic in a social media world, and I'd even take it one step further and say it's the first situation that has truly affected just about every corner of the world together. The March roundup reflects that as much as it should, because it's all our lives are right now.

Life During a Global Pandemic

That being said, my posting schedule was light this month because I was busy refreshing the news and also busy with my day job in the health care information world. There was a LOT of content to update on the many websites I manage, and there still is, daily as things change.

I'm very lucky to be working from home as of a week ago, and it's been so great. I love being able to shed a lot of the daily grind that comes from having to prepare to go into an office, being at an office, and going back and forth from an office. There's a lot less laundry and dishwashing, a lot less meal prep, and a lot less spending happening in my world, something that is just a small delight in the face of a pretty terrifying situation out there.

Both myself and Patrick are also lucky to be in two stable industries at this time — health care and telecommunications, respectively. We're getting paid like normal with zero thoughts of being laid off or having our incomes affected. It's sobering to hear of friends every day who are being let go, who have to wait for unemployment to kick in, and whose futures are uncertain. We are doing what we can to make the money we spend at places they work, and we are both putting big tips down as much as possible too when we order takeout food and drinks. It's only the right thing to do to help the people we like and the businesses we enjoy, so we can keep on seeing and enjoying them once this situation shakes out.

Travel

I was lucky to get to go to Beech Mountain right before everything started getting bad. One day later and we probably would have had to cancel this trip, and we wouldn't have seen snow this year, or spent an amazing weekend with booze, food, and most importantly, awesome friends.

For now, this is about as close to the outside world as we'll be getting.
