Thanksgiving 2020 is not going to be the same as any year's Thanksgiving because it has to be different. Or at least, I hope you think so.
In the grand scheme of life, missing one Thanksgiving is not going to be a big deal once we cross into 2021, and it won't be a big deal in five or ten years... unless you don't heed the warnings of actual, trained scientists to social distance, and you contract covid or give it to someone else, and it permanently damages or kills them.
I've already told our families that we will not be participating in regular Thanksgiving this year, unless it's nice weather and we can have a small, outdoor celebration perhaps. Being in South Carolina, that's an option we are lucky to even comprehend, and it looks like we are on track to have a beautiful 75 degree day in the Midlands. I wrote about this decision to only celebrate outside for the Free Times, and hope it inspired more people to stop being dicks and take this seriously. Or at least, to take it seriously, at least.
Do the right thing, and we should be back to regularly scheduled holidays by this time next year. I can only hope this prediction isn't something I'll look back on with sadness. Wear your mask, don't go into people's houses (even if you did grow up there — so what?!), and make good choices that are guided by science and not your stupid beliefs that originated from cable TV.
My two person Thanksgiving menu:
You do NOT have to make everything from scratch to enjoy a two-person Thanksgiving. Pick and choose what you'll make at home, and buy the rest from your favorite small business, they can use your money this year!
- Protein of choice: turkey breast, Gardein turk'y, or a Celebration roast
- Mashed potatoes and brown gravy
- Green bean casserole
- Parmesan kale salad
- Stuffing
- Mac and cheese
- Peas, onions, and almonds
- Pumpkin cheesecake
And if you're anything like me, you'll want leftovers the next day, so cook enough of your favorite dishes for that! Happy Thanksgiving and I hope you're alive to enjoy it in 2021!
