Faux Meat Fridays: Reviews of Alternative Meat

Welcome to faux meat Fridays, where I'll review a new meat alternative on Fridays! Okay, most Fridays, but every Friday is the goal.

More people than ever are curious about meat alternatives, whether it's due to health reasons, the cost of meat, or concerns about the meat industry itself. Other people are jackoffs who will not read this and will discount any benefits or curiosity the rest of us get from trying meat alternatives. With the widespread interest in alternative meats comes the increased manufacturing of them. There are so many meat stand ins these days, and not all of them are good. That's where these reviews come in.

It's hard to know which meat alternatives are worth spending your hard earned money on.

I'll try both mainstream and more obscure faux meats, from refrigerated to frozen, across all "types" like beef, chicken, pork, and yes, maybe even faux seafood too... maybe. Let me know in the comments or on social media if you'd like me to review a certain brand or product and I'll do my best to find and try it!

For now, I'll start off with a tofu review, but in the future will try to veer more towards items that are meant to resemble meat products.

Moroccan Tofu Cubes

Meat Type: none

Taste: Lightly spiced

Texture: Like regular tofu

Realisticness: N/A

Rating: ♥♥♥ (⅗)

I followed the serving suggestion of including these in a pearl couscous salad. They were easy to make, just bake them on a baking sheet at 375 F for 20 minutes. I included rapini broccoli florets too while baking, to up my vegetable intake, but otherwise followed the directions in the recipe.

I wish these were a little bit more spiced with the aromatic flavors Morocco is known for. I tried to add a little harissa to them, but sadly my jar had expired. The serving size of this is a bit small, so plan to get more than one pack if you're feeding more than two people. Otherwise, these are pretty good and I'd buy them again to add to a tagine or other Moroccan spiced meal. This pack came from Whole Foods, but are also available at Publix, Target, and other natural grocery stores.
