There seem to be two schools of thought when it comes to dealing with the hottest month of the year here in the hottest place in the world… either stay inside in the AC or get out there and embrace the sweat with activities involving being near or in water and drinking beer! Either way you go, you won’t be wrong.

Aug 1 – Kick the month off right with First Thursdays on Main, featuring tons of art and the delectable tastes of Paradise Ice, Wine Down on Main, and more more more.

Aug 2 Brew at the Zoo at Riverbanks Zoo. Beer, music, and animals! 7-9 p.m. $50 for non-members/30 for members and they always need volunteers (which I’ve done before, it’s pretty fun and free admission!)

Aug 2 – Or get your drink on inside with Arts & Draughts at the Columbia Museum of Art. Beer, music, and art! 7-11 p.m. $8 for non-members/5 for members

Aug 3Congaree Rocks Festival 2013 at Stone River (the old New Orleans Restaurant), begins at 12 p.m., tickets are $10 in advance/12 at the door and feature Brian Conner and his Amazing Friends

Aug 3 Get Spicy with Good Life Cafe! Raw Asian food prep class. 10 a.m., $30

Aug 12 Farm to Table dinner at City Roots featuring Rosso Trattoria and LowCo BBQ. 7:30 p.m., $60 per person.

Aug 13 ServSafe certification classes are sponsored by the SC Hospitality Association and they meet all state health department requirements. This would be an excellent one for food managers or budding restauranteurs to take! 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., $75-170 call for more info

Aug 16 – Stay out of downtown and the campus area, AND Target on Garner’s Ferry, for it is move in weekend!

Aug 24 Wine on the River at the West Columbia Riverwalk, 7-10 p.m., tickets are $25. This is a fun time, I went to it in the spring! If you drink at least one sample of each wine you’ve made the ticket purchase worthwhile, not to mention the free food from local restaurants and getting to meet neighbors.

Aug 27 – Learn to healthfully flavor your foods with herbs from Katherine Shavo, who offers many informative classes each month at Let’s Cook!
