Food We Grew Up With

by April on September 15, 2011

At my previous job, I worked in a large office (think 100+ people) that all shared a break room, so we all got to smell each other’s lunches like it or not. The various smells could be horrifyingly unpleasant, like the lady that ate tuna on crackers with a side of celery sticks every single day to the delicious fried rice someone else reheated, to the nostalgic smell of Spagetti-Os, a smell I knew without even looking to see what it was. The scent of the faux cheesey-tomato-y, pasta rings wafted through the air and it was all I wanted for lunch. I begrudgingly ate whatever healthy, homemade thing I’d brought that day barely tasting it because I wanted a bowl of childhood in the middle of the day during my soul sucking adult life.

Of course I indulged myself that little bit of happiness then, and I still joyously do it every now and again and in more ways than just Spagetti-Os. Some favorite foods from my childhood include:

DOTS (A fat-free candy!)

Count Chocula cereal (Diabetes in a box- with whole grains)

Cheese Puffs (Discoloring your gum lines for days on end)

Yoo-hoo (A chocolate flavored drink)

Sometimes there just is no comparison and you’ve got to suck it up and just have that Yoo-Hoo, but that’s the glorious thing about living a healthy, balanced life- acknowledge the craving, and take the time to balance out the deliciously sugary and nutrient void drink with other more healthful foods that will keep you going.

Looks like a lot of bloggers have been thinking about back in the day lately! When I saw Christina’s post on the same topic today I thought, “No way!”

What are some favorite foods you grew up with and stuff indulge in on occasion? And what of the 80s trends that are coming back now are horrifying you?

Any kind of fruit gummy snack…fruit by the foot, fruit roll ups, GUSHERS. Always wanted them in my lunch, only got them on occasion. I think my mom knew what she was doing :)

    Also–lunchables.

      Oooh yes, Gushers were awesome!

Well, you are a bit younger than I am but I will give you some examples of the food I grew up on in Columbia.

Cromers P-nuts at Dutch Square mall. They had live monkeys in a glass enclosure!
Orange Julius-also at Dutch Square mall
Sandys Hotdogs-I think I heard they closed their origional location!
    Piggy Park BBQ
    Rushs Burgers
    Egg Roll Station

Oh I could go on forever!
    Thank you for the memories!

My friends and I mixed up this little after-school snack: mix salsa with sour cream and plow through a bag of tortilla chips!
